In Vino Veritas

In Vino Veritas

A bi-weekly discussion group for grad students and young professionals

In vino veritas est. Im Wein liegt die Wahrheit. In wine, truth.

Every Sunday a group of 50 or more grad students, law students, and young professionals between the ages of 22-35 gathers at the Catholic Center at NYU for a dinner. The group is a recognized university club with a small budget to cover the food each week, members of the group being the chefs de cuisine each week.

But there is more. Who doesn't loosen up a little after a couple of bevies? If you like to ask important questions, if you enjoy wine and good conversation, if you have a mind that doesn't like to settle with half-truths and popular opinions, In Vino Veritas is for you.

In Vino Veritas is an informal discussion group, led by Fr. Sebastian, the chaplain, on matters of perennial importance and contemporary relevance. Past topics and discussions have regarded statements about God and the world from the Holy Father, and for the 2015-16 academic year, we discussed the ten commandments, the role of women in the Catholic Church, the Church's teaching on marriage, and prayer. Beginning with the Fall of 2016, we will discuss the Beatitudes.

The Beatitudes reveal the goal of human existence, the ultimate end of human acts: God calls us to his own beatitude...The Beatitudes confront us with decisive choices concerning earthly goods; they purify our hearts in order to teach us to love God above all things. (CCC 1719; 1728).

9/18: Introduction to the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount
10/2: Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11/13: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be satisfied.
12/4: Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
1/29: Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
2/12: Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
TBA: Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
